90210 Star Luke Perry Dies of Massive Stroke

The star of “Beverly Hills, 90210” Luke Perry died at the age of just 52 as a result of a severe stroke. Many people faced shock and confusion following the news. They may be thinking how could somebody so young die from a stroke? – It is more likely than you can imagine.

Middle-aged adults are more likely to die from stroke
The risk for stroke may increase with age, but middle-aged adults are more likely to die from stroke.

After a stroke, the brain experiences swelling. Brains shrink with age, so older adults tend to survive the brain swelling stage. Middle-aged adults, however, have larger brains and less room in their skull to allow for swelling.

Brain swelling following his stroke may have been what killed Perry. The public is still not aware whether Perry suffered an ischemic or a hemorrhagic stroke. Ischemic strokes are more common and caused by a blood clot. Hemorrhagic strokes are more deadly and are the result of a burst or ruptured artery. Both types of strokes can lead to severe swelling.

A stroke can affect you regardless of age
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 795,000 Americans suffer from strokes each year. Roughly 140,000 of those people die from their strokes. Anybody can suffer a stroke – age does not matter.

It is important to know the warning signs of stroke and act right away. Immediate hospitalisation can save lives. It can also reduce the risk of disability.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Luke Perry and to all who have lost loved ones to stroke.
